Procedure for the Design of Active Noise and Vibration Control Systems

The application of active control techniques in the reduction of excessive noise and vibration is becoming more popular. This paper describes a procedure for designing a” active noise control system using a” experimentally validated finite element model. The procedure has been applied to the control of airborne noise in a” enclosed space generated by a distributed source such as a large machine. Modal control was used to minimize the noise at a specific frequency. The finite element analysis computed the complex transfer functions used to optimize both control actuator and sensor placement and control force magnitude. The analytical control performance predictions have been validated experimentally.
